Immigration and customs of Chile are handled in San Pedro de Atacama. Don't drive to the actual border, you will be sent back! Smooth and fast process.
Carnet
No Carnet de Passages needed, Temporary Import Permit is created at border. Make sure that you get it, they don't always give it automatically and you have a serious problem if you don't have it when you w.ant to leave the country. You get 3 months. Passport and TIP are linked. If you want to leave the country while leaving the vehicle in Chili you should present yourself with the person storing the car in person at customs to get a release document, but you always have to get the car out before the 3 months expire.

Good quality. Distance between fuel stations may be as much as 200 km in remote areas.
Corruption
No incidents. Police is helpful and correct.
Roads
Main roads are good. In rural areas roads can be poor corrugated dirt roads. Many improvement projects in progress.
Crime
Be very careful in the larger cities. In Valparaiso we were robbed and a handbag was stolen, in Calama our car was broken into. Ask locals where the dangerous places are.
