Suriname
Visa
Dutch citizens need to get a "Tourist Card" before entering the country. The card is not available at land borders. We got ours at the consulate in Cayenne, French Guiana. We needed the passport only, got them in 30 minutes and paid EUR 30 each.
Arrival
Entry from French Guiana at Albina border crossing on 2016-10-06
Passport stamps straightforward with the Tourist Cards. We had to leave the vehicle in the customs area to get a liability insurance first. Customs directed us where to get it, a few hundred meters walking into Albina. Once we had it we got the TIP. It took about 1 hour to get the insurance and 10 min. at customes and immigtation. We got 1 month for us and the car.
Departure
Exit to Guyana at Canaiwama on 2016-11-04
We arrived the night before and camped in front of the fence. When we woke up at 6:00 there was already a line of cars behind ours. The ferry departs at 10:00, the fence opens at 8:00 and closes at 9:00. The ferry has a capacity of about 20 vehicles and was full when we traveled. Additional crossing may be made if required by demand. You must show your liability insurance for Guyana to buy a ticket. The whole procedure took about 30 min. Crossing time is nearly 1 hour; Guyana is 1 hour behind Suriname.
Steps:
- Buy ticket; insurance is checked and passport handed in
- Wait for passport to be handed back
- Have passport stamped at Immigration
- Return TIP at customs
- Have vehicle checked by Customs
- Proceed to ferry
Carnet
Noit needed. A TIP valid for 1 month is issued once you got your liability insurance.
Insurance
Assuria, bought in Albina. Costed about EUR 15, maximum coverage is about EUR 6000.

Roads
Generally good, some parts poor when used too much by heavy traffic. Main problem is "waves" and deep holes.
