Tanzania
Visa
Quickly obtained at border, USD 50 per person.
Arrival
From Burundi
30 minutes, uneventful. Car not checked.
Departure
To Malawi
15 minutes. They asked if we had paid the road tax. We showed a pile of 5 cm high of receipts collected during the trip and told the road tax receipt had to be somewhere in the pile. We then were allowed to go. Car not checked.
Carnet
Needed.
Insurance
TourInsure. Not asked for.
Money
ATMs accepting visa widely available. Some ATMs accept Maestro as well.
Diesel
Widely available. About € 1.00 per liter.
Corruption
One incident: after exceeding the speed limit we could choose between a fine of 30,000 Shillings with receipt or 10,000 without. Otherwise stopped by the police about once per day for a chat.
Roads
Much better than expected. With exception of the section between Iringa and Mbeya and 40 km between Burundi and Mwanza all main roads were tarred and of good to excellent quality. In the northern part of Tanzania we saw few speed checks, in the south many more. You have to be very careful not to drive faster than 50 km/h in urban areas. Often is not clearly indicated where the 50 km starts or ends.
Other
Apparently a USD 20 road tax has to be paid upon entry.
